| St. John's Second German Lutheran ChurchMarriages by Groom's Name
The baptismal, marriage and death/burial registers of St. John Ev. Lutheran Church located at 144 Court St., Newark, N.J. were indexed by genealogists, Tom & Kathryn Peters who continue their quest to help with German genealogical research for Newark ancestors. While this parish began in 1833, the metrical records from 1833-1845 do not appear to be extant. Civil copies of the marriages performed in this church are preserved within the Essex Co., N.J. marriages which have been indexed and digital copies produced by familysearch.org and cover the period 1836-1845. We have produced indexes for the following records: Baptisms: 1846-1902 Marriages: 1846-1903 Deaths/Burials: 1846-1902 Ministers who served St. John’s at the Court Street location include the following: Lorenz Schmidt 1833 There are over 10,000 entries indexed here. It should be noted that the German birthplaces are noted in all of the church entries except the baptisms of George Turk, 1855-1866! Not included are the records of the St. John Ev. Luth. Parish that split from the Court St. parish. Having two Lutheran parishes with the same name causes much confusion. They can only be “sorted out” by the location of the church edifice or by the name of the minister. The other St. John worshipped on Halsey St. and later removed to a new church on Avon Avenue in Newark. If you locate an entry of interest and would like to obtain a copy, there are 3 ways to go about it: 1.
