St. James' Church was organized in 1853. It was the first Catholic church in the industrial neighborhood known as "Down Neck". The Rev. Louis D. Senez, rector of St. Patrick's Church bought the land in April, 1854 and the cornerstone was laid on June 19, 1854. The huge building took years to finish and when it was done became the largest church built in Newark prior to the Civil War. The church, located at the corner of Lafayette and Madison streets had the tallest spire in the city. It was demolished in the 1980's. One of the many achievements of the Rev. Patrick Cody was the hospital of St. James at the corner of Elm and Jefferson Streets. The parish school was founded in 1854.
